Below is a list of the most common deadly puppy diseases.  Sadly, most of these diseases are easy for your puppy to pick up and become infected, especially within the first year of their life. You can click on the name of each puppy disease below to learn more about that specific illness.

Parvo Virus  (#1 puppy killer)

Parvo is the number one puppy killer! Parvo is extremely contagious and easily picked up by puppies. Parvo kills within 48-72 hours after they get it. Parvo is also known for “sudden death.”

Distemper  (brutal disease with very high death rate!)

Brutal & cruel disease! Distemper KILLS well over 1/2 the puppies that get it and the ones that do live through it often wish they didn’t.

Parainfluenza (common but not really life-threatening)

Canine parainfluenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease very often mistaken for kennel cough.

Hepatitis  (excruciating death!)

Causes liver & kidney failure. Death can result as soon as 2 hours after the initial signs or even sudden death. This is a very frightening and painful disease.

Adenovirus Type 2

There are 2 kinds of adenovirus. The first is called “Canine Adenovirus Type 1 (CAV-1) which produces hepatitis (discussed above). The second type is Adenovirus Type 2 (CAV-2) which is less serious and produces a cough that can turn into pneumonia (which can be deadly if not treated.) 

 

 Leptospirosis (Lepto)

This bacterial disease causes life-threatening illness including liver failure, kidney failure or both. Symptoms will vary.
