Are Schnauzers Good with Children?

First let’s make sure you understand the basic personality of a Schnauzer. Miniature Schnauzers are recognized by AKC as a “terrier breed.” If you aren’t familiar with terriers personality they have a very distinctive way about them. Known to be lively, spirited, happy, sporty, athletic,  loyal, and energetic (but NOT spazy, high strung or hyper as they settle down very nicely and have a real soothing calmness to them as well), They are known to be engaging, interactive, social pets and bring so much personality to the home which makes them excellent family pets.

Miniature Schnauzers are an extremely popular family pet. (rated in the top 12 most popular dogs with AKC) However, they are no different then any other breed of dog. Not all dogs or puppies like children or are suitable for kids. You are going to have schnauzers that are great with kids and love to play, romp and cuddle them (which will be most of them) but on the other hand you will also have some that prefer adults and either dislike kids or ignore kids, especially the teacup sizes. So no matter what breed of dog your looking to buy, if you have small children, toddlers or babies, it’s best to talk to the breeder about which puppies in the litter seem to enjoy kids more. Last, if you have children, toddlers or babies it is strongly recommended that you stay away from buying a puppy (in any breed) that has an “alpha” or “dominate” personality. Get a puppy that is more easy going, rolly polly, go with the flow, passive, submissive and/or more playful, upbeat, cheerful, interactive, social and fun.
